My dear Mr Cranch,
There must be some mistake about the bronze cast of Story’s Beethoven: [1] because I explained fully to him & Mrs Story, when I was at Paris in the summer, the reasons for my being unable to accept such a piece of generosity. I agreed to receive thankfully a plaster cast—that is all. The bronze must be destined for somebody else.
We arrived three weeks ago—and are so supremely uncomfortable, thro’ the mistake of a friend, [2] that we wanted heart (really) to unpack our trunks even—much less see & be seen by friends. This trouble, however, seems likely to leave us at last—say,—in a week or so—and certainly one of the first clappings of our wings, free of the birdlime, will be in the light of your friendliness– So expect us, pray—and excuse us where need may seem, and think of us, dear Mrs Cranch & yourself, as
