1. Month and year provided by the postmark. The day is suggested by reference to the London receiving stamp of 5 May 1857 (letters at this time taking approximately five or six days to reach London from Florence) and by reference to the first digit of the postmark’s date, which is clearly a “2” (the second digit was torn away).
2. This letter is written on the flap and in the throat of the envelope. The stamp has been carelessly excised, resulting in the loss of about one-third of the text.
