Dear Sir Edward,

Your Son desires me to inform you that he has just received your letter, but is unable to answer it at once, as he would desire to do—having been confined to his bed by an attack of gastric fever for the last fortnight: he is better, however, and, I trust, will soon be in a condition to assure you so. He has the best medical advice obtainable here, or perhaps in Florence—that of Dr Trotman—from whom he receives unremitting attention; & I am staying with my family at the next door to his Hôtel. Should he continue too poorly to write to you in a day or two, you may depend on my accurately informing you of his condition.
