Correspondence

4052.  EBB to Sophia Eckley

As published in The Brownings’ Correspondence, 24, 144.

[Bagni di Lucca]

[?23] [September 1857] [1]

Seeing David ride by, we stop him to say one word. It is not measles—not anything else infectious, & Peni is to be up today– Only fatigue & the sun were the enemies.

Under these circumstances, wont you come this evening my dear Sophie– I dare to ask you.

Your very affectionate EBB

Publication: None traced.

Manuscript: Berg Collection.

1. Conjectural dating based on EBB’s reference to Pen’s illness and her inviting Mrs. Eckley for “this evening”—i.e., Wednesday (see the three preceding letters).
