Correspondence

4345.  EBB to Sophia Eckley

As published in The Brownings’ Correspondence, 26, 70.

[Rome]

[?early March 1859] [1]

Dearest kindest Sophie, it is hard to resist you,—also the bells are ringing & dinging into one’s brain– But I wont go—no, dear. Peni will be coming back from the show & I must see a little to him—then, there are other things that want me—& I myself want to keep fresh & untired for this evening .. when you come to me, remember–

Your ever grateful & loving

Ba–

Publication: None traced.

Manuscript: Berg Collection.

1. Conjectural dating based on EBB’s reference to Pen’s attending a “show,” perhaps one associated with the late stages of Carnival (see letter 4346, note 3).
