4353. EBB to Antonio Gallenga

Offered for sale by Maggs, Catalogue 749, 1945, item 1740. 2½ pp., 12mo. EBB asks Gallenga if he is willing to translate a pamphlet [2] by M. Salvagnoli, and referring to the unrest in Italy, she writes: “The patriots in Tuscany are absolutely agreed upon waiting the results of the situation, without crossing the idea of the Independence of Italy by any opinions upon internal governments. Such unity, it is said among persons of every variety of view, republican, constitutional &c. was never before known in Italy. I had used your suggestion, this is the reply, & I confess to you I consider it adequate. May God help Italy.”
1. Conjectural dating suggested by EBB’s reference to Gallenga in letter 4358.
2. Della Indipendenza d’Italia (Florence, 1859) by Vincenzo Salvagnoli (1802–61), who became the minister of ecclesiastical affairs in the Tuscan provisional government of 1859. A translation of the pamphlet, entitled The Independence of Italy, presumably by Gallenga (see letter 4371), was published in London in 1860.
