4363.  EBB to David Eckley, III

As published in The Brownings’ Correspondence, 26, 90.

[Rome]

[?19 March 1859] [1]

My dearest little Doady, I dont know how to thank you for your beautiful Maltese cross. It shines like a star, and will make me always remember in love your beloved Mama’s little Doady– May God bless and love you always–

Your true and tender friend,

Penini’s mama.

Address: Master David Eckley / Porta Pinciana / Roma.

Publication: None traced.

Manuscript: Berg Collection.

1. Conjectural date based on EBB’s reference in letter 4364 to sending a “note to Doady.” Also, her question in that letter—“What Muse of the heart inspired the child?”—may have been prompted by the gift of the “Maltese cross.”
