1. The only other year EBB and Mrs. Eckley were both at Rome in April was 1861, by which time the friendship had ended.

2. In the Protestant Cemetery. Enclosed in this letter was a flower or a leaf with the following words written on the same page by Mrs. Eckley: “I feel the flowers growing over me.” This phrase is taken from a remark attributed to Keats: “O! I can feel the cold earth upon me—the daisies growing over me” (see letter 866, note 6).
