Dearest dear Sophie, I think I had better keep myself for the evening,—particularly as the heat is great & I am not over-strong today. Thank you for dear Doady. How well he looks!
Was a small red scarf found in your carriage by chance? If so, it belongs to Peni–
Gordigiani has been here, & Robert will tell you of all the wonders he promises to the advantage of the picture– Dear, will you come at a quarter to eight? That, I think, will be the right hour.

1. Approximate dating suggested by EBB’s references to the heat and Gordigiani, as well as by Mrs. Eckley’s presence in Florence. The latter and her family left Florence for Bagni di Lucca on or about 21 June; EBB began sitting again for Gordigiani sometime in June between the dates of letters 4432 and 4436; and, as of letter 4422, the heat in Florence was not “too oppressive” but threatened to become so.
