Dear Miss Field,

No letters, no Carta di soggiorno! [2] I fear you have lost them—why do you make people so very sorry? This is the hastiest of words, for it is very late & I want to catch to-morrow’s Post. What do you mean by pretending that we here were not the obliged, and are not the grateful people? Your stay made us happy, you know. Make us happy again, says (or would say, but that she’s asleep) my wife & says also
