1. Approximate dating based on the assumption that Landor’s mention of Pen’s “progress” refers to his Latin and mathematics studies with Abbé Venturini, which began in mid-December 1859. EBB reports her son’s progress in many letters of this period; see for example letters 4547, 4553, and 4571.
