Happy New Year!
Dear Friends
Permit me to introduce my son & his travelling companion Mr Scoville [1] who are going before us pedestrian wise to Rome– We hope to be there by the ninth of February to set up our tent also– They have in charge to look for lodgings for us in which I trust you will aid them with any suggestions, your superior wisdom and experience may furnish–
I enclose a note from Mr Ruskin [2] which came in a letter to me not knowing your address by mail[.]
I have much to tell you of the cause of our dear Italy when I see you– All is going well so far let us hope to the End——

1. Samuel Scoville (1835–1902), Yale graduate, who in 1858 served as Mrs. Stowe’s amanuensis. In the summer of 1859, he became engaged to her niece Harriet Eliza Beecher (1838–1911), daughter of Mrs. Stowe’s brother Henry Ward Beecher. The Stowe son who accompanied Scoville on a walking tour of Italy was Frederick William Stowe (1840–71?). The travelling companions sailed for Europe on 1 August 1859.
