1. Doubtless containing EBB’s “The North and the South,” which appeared in The Independent on 7 November 1861. It seems likely that RB sent a transcript of the poem in his own hand. The version that Tilton published is subtitled “(Hans Christian Andersen’s Visit to Italy, May, 1861)” and is dated after the last line “Written at the end of May, 1861.” Both subtitle and date match those on RB’s transcript that is now at the British Library.
