1. Dating based on RB’s address, whither he moved on 8 May 1862, and on Lady Russell’s implication that this would be RB’s first visit to 2 Audley Square. Arthur Russell told W.C. Cartwright on 23 June 1862 that his mother “sees many friends & Browning has been 3 days running” (see SD2587).

2. “Swimming without a life-jacket.” Cf. Horace, Satires I, 4, 120 (trans. H. Rushton Fairclough): “Nabis sine cortice” (“You will swim without the cork”).
