Jan. 14. ’62.
Dear Mr Lowell,
Will you suffer me to introduce to you my friend—Mr Dicey—just about visiting America and desirous of understanding thoroughly whatever he may have to report upon afterwards? [1] His good, true, clever books about Italian affairs had & have a sensible effect in England: he will certainly observe as honestly among you, and probably instruct us no less on his return.
I am hurried in my application,—or I might say a word or two on my own account—
Ever yours faithfully
Robert Browning.
Publication: None traced.
Manuscript: Armstrong Browning Library.
1. Lowell is referred to as “one of my friends” in Dicey’s Six Months in the Federal States (1863), II, 220.
