My dear Sir,

The sheets arrived to-day! or, rather, a portion of them—from page 97 to the end. What has become of the first parcel? The missing pages should be forwarded immediately.

Mr. Miller will pay £250 for the use of the sheets 30 days before publication in England. [2] This offer, which is only half as good as the Last Poems procured, is, nevertheless, in view of our warlike times, better than I hoped to secure, & better than any other publisher would be likely to make.

It is hardly possible that I shall be able to use the Essays in The Independent, though, if I can, I will—for the sake of the dead.

The cause of Liberty & the Nation brightened—in spite of a well-meaning & incompetent President & Cabinet.
