My dear Milnes,
Landor never went to Rome nor wrote the letter [1] —and is reported to me as driving out occasionally, “going in the garden or sitting on the terrace, quite well in health and much better in temper.” Meno male! [2]
I will see to the other matter,—the inscription etc. [3] —before you leave, if that must unfortunately be.

1. RB is correct that Landor did not go to Rome, but he did write the letter (see letter 5100). It appeared over his full name in The Times of 26 June 1862 (p. 7) and took satirical aim at various Roman Catholic clergymen.
