My dear Browning
I ascertained a few days ago that though not yet returned you were immediately expected– And I venture therefore now to send you the enclosed, which has been lying for you since the first–
It will be a very very great pleasure to both of us here to have a few lines from you, saying, first that you and Peny are in brave good health, and next that you left your Sister and Father well and happy. We have been here for a fortnight, and may probably stay another month. It is a beautiful place– Would that you could come & see it, staying with us! You’d be welcome as the morning–
My wife is really getting some strength again at last. She is also to take walks that are countable by miles,—three, four, nay four and a half,—so much accomplished already! Who knows whether it may not get to five and six, a marvellous exploit for such an incapable!!
I am myself trying to do a little literary work—and find the hinges move not quite so easily as of old! —I have the “Selections” here too, in a charming looking little volume, for which I anticipate a Great Success. After not many days are over, you shall have what I propose for the pages of preface– I do not want that the Chapmans should publish until this month has closed. [1]
And then—well you know I never press those matters, but if my friend R.B. were ready with a new volume by about February or March next, we should see what we should see!
Robert Lytton has written to me with overflowing gratitude of a kind letter you have lately written him– [2] A good fellow he is, be sure; a rare and fine nature, spite of anything or everything. He comes to stay with us for a good while in the winter—and we will all, I hope, make happy together.
Are you engaged for Xmas Day—and if not, will you engage yourself to us? Robert is to arrive by that High Festival–
