My dear Sir
Many thanks for your letter. The passage from “Old pictures in Florence” is exactly the one that always floated uppermost in my memory while I was painting the picture, [2] and chiefly determined its character, but the word “morning” precluded the quotation of it.
Now you are so kind as to allow me to write it “evening” there is nothing wanting. [3]
The greatest pleasure to me in connection with the picture is the thought that you care for it: my highest ambition for it has been just that.
