The above address, which is mine, will explain why I was unable to profit by your kindness yesterday—your note having been directed to an unknown R.B. (I am told, a cousin of my grandfather’s)—who, by this time, must wish me back in Italy.

1. George James Howard (1843–1911), son of Charles Wentworth George Howard (1814–79) and his wife, Mary Priscilla Harriet (née Parke, 1822–43), was an artist and, in 1889, succeeded an uncle as the 9th Earl of Carlisle.

2. Cecilia Arabella Frances Parke (née Barlow, 1784–1879), Lady Wensleydale, was the wife of James Parke (1782–1868), 1st Baron Wensleydale. She was the recipient’s maternal grandmother.
