Dear Sir,

I shall be sorry indeed, if you have expected any contribution of mine toward a “memoir”: [1] similar requests (with nothing like the gentlemanliness of yours, however) have occasionally been made to me—and I always returned the same answer—whence probably the inaccurate dates and mistaken facts in such notices as I have been unlucky enough to see. All that I can say is, I am quite sure your considerateness will secure me from any fresh annoyance of that sort: as to my poetry, that is wholly at your service, of course.
