Dear Mrs Bayne,

I am glad indeed to hear your kind voice again—Hibernicè [1] —thro’ the well known hand-writing. For the invitation,—I accept it with pleasure: I already know the Professor [2] a little, & like him much.

The Boy shall be informed of your goodness, and I hope to profit by it in my degree. All regards to you all.

1. “In the Irish fashion”; that is to say, paradoxically or seemingly illogically.

2. Probably William Whewell (1794–1866), professor of moral philosophy at Cambridge and, at this time, Master of Trinity College. He was a friend of Mrs. Bayne’s father, George Pryme (1781–1868), professor of political economy at Cambridge. Whewell is listed in RB’s address book of this period (AB-5) at Trinity College.
