My dear Sir
It must seem as if there were no escape for you from the trouble to which your great kindness has so long exposed you—but I feel uncertain whether a letter sent by me on this day week. Novr 29—and enclosing a Post Office Order for £6.18.6 due to you, may not have miscarried. It has happened that twice a letter—enclosing very much larger sums for which I was accountable was lost—or, rather, was not received—though subsequently recovered, when enquired for—and I was blamed for having so long deferred the enquiry so long.
Our Post Office is very regular—but Lord Lyttelton, [2] our Lord Lieutenant left some thirty or forty pounds which I had deposited in his Bankers hands, by his own direction—till it had been quite forgotten by him during four or five months. The other was through the neglect of a Society Treasurer—but in both cases the money was recovered when enquired for– Let me therefore hope that you will forgive this annoyance—and take no more trouble than merely to redirect—and send back—the cover of this letter which will inform me that the money was received! Believe me to be ever very truly & much obliged

I am not, at all, anxious about the money—and shall care very little if it be lost: but it would grieve me much if you were to suppose me forgetful of this, or any other debt due to you.
