It looks as if I had been forgetful of a promise to you—that the Book you wanted should only reach you after my promise to send it, made months ago. But it was out of print [1] —and, when in print again, I wanted to give you, along with it, my own last thing. [2] The unlucky wish to combine these, makes me “come tardily off,” but I trust to your kindness to interpret all for the best—as indeed I deserve—being ever
