1. Approximate dating based on the stationery, bearing an 1864 watermark, which RB used from March 1865 to February 1866, and on the possibility that “the request” came from the photogapher Julia Cameron (Mrs. Prinsep’s sister), asking for a sitting. In May 1865, she took photographs of RB (reproduced facing pp. 240 and 241) and Pen (reproduced as this volume’s frontispiece) in the garden of Mrs. Prinsep’s residence in Kensington, Little Holland House.
