My dear Browning

I return Miss Gabriel’s letter (whom I perfectly & pleasantly remember) & send with it the answer I have just received from my sister [1] to whom I sent hers with yours. [2] I could not make out at first what she means by Uphill & the Birthday (which have been applied for to set to music) not being hers; but now remember that she considered their copyright to belong to a Magazine where they first appeared. [3]

Ever yours affectionately

D. G. Rossetti

Robert Browning Esq

Publication: Rossetti, 3, 247–248.

Manuscript: Princeton University.

1. See SD2742.

2. Neither Virginia Gabriel’s letter nor RB’s has surfaced.

3. Christina Rossetti’s “Up-Hill” was published in Macmillan’s Magazine of February 1861 (p. 325); “A Birthday,” in the issue of April 1861 (p. 498). Both poems were collected in her Goblin Market and Other Poems (1862).
