My dear Lady Charlotte, [2]

You will wonder at my delay in replying to your kind invitation: the fact is, I have very unsatisfactory news from Paris,—my Father’s state of health greatly disquiets me,—and I hardly feel confidence enough to engage myself as if nothing were the matter: but it would be—(I am sure you know this)—a great pleasure to me if I could see you anywhere, or anyhow. If you will let me come,—say, next Friday week,—I hope I shall be able to enjoy it greatly.
