My dear Sir,

I beg to thank you for your letter and to say that, considering the age of my son, I should prefer his going to reside not earlier than in October, next year; indeed I had almost wished to appoint the following January, were it allowable: but I may perhaps be somewhat over-anxious as to his likelihood of meeting the requirements of Balliol. This arises from his having given much time to other objects of study than Latin & Greek,—of course with the intention of occupying himself exclusively with the latter when at College. On the whole, I venture to appoint October, 1867.

Pray forgive me for troubling you with details—of which the only excuse is that they interest myself so much—and believe me,
