June 12. ’66.

Dear Cartwright,

I want to tell you, & Lady William [1] also, why I shall be away for some time, I fear. I get, this afternoon, a telegram which calls me to Paris at once—on account of the illness of my Father—I apprehend, very serious illness. I am vexed to think I have stayed away so long from Audley Square in the confidence that every next evening would take me there easily: if things are better than I hope, I will write. In any case I am ever affectionately,
