Correspondence

5775.  RB to Lady Augusta Stanley

As published in The Brownings’ Correspondence, 32, 97.

151. Rue de Grenelle St Gn

June. 17. ’66.

My dear Lady Augusta,

It is only due to your old kind feeling for my Father that I should tell you he died on the 14th last,—not of the usual infirmities of old age, but an internal hæmorrage which admitted of no relief. He retained his faculties up to the very last,—also the strange sweetness of temper which I never ceased to wonder at, after fifty years experience of the same. His indifference to death was not so strange in him,—but was absolute. I was called to him by telegram, and arrived in time—indeed twenty four hours before the end. He was buried yesterday at Montmartre. You know what a void this leaves in my Sister’s life: I hope to induce her to come and reside with me.

With all regards to the Dean,

Most truly yours ever

Robert Browning.
