My dear Mr Browning:

This time I do not come from the Desert, but from one of the circles of your friends, bringing you greetings direct from Lowell, Fields and others. Mrs. Procter has given me your London address, and now I ask when it will be convenient for you to receive a call from me. [1] My wife [2] had the pleasure of meeting you twelve years ago in Rome (long before our marriage) in the house of her uncle, Dr Emil Braun, whose wife [3] you will no doubt remember as an old friend of Mr. Kenyon. We are en route to Germany, but are greatly desirous of the pleasure of seeing you before we leave London.

1. RB responded the following day, appointing a time for Taylor’s call (see List of Absent Letters, p. 399). Taylor describes his visit to RB and a later meeting that same day in SD2883.

2. Marie Taylor (née Hansen, 1829–1925), daughter of Peter Andreas Hansen (1795–1874), Danish-born German astronomer, and his wife, Emilina Auguste (née Braun, 1811–58), sister of August Emil Braun. Marie married Bayard Taylor (1825–78) on 27 October 1857 at Gotha in the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.

3. Anne Braun (née Thomson, 1810–63), wife of August Emil Braun (1809–56).
