1. John Trivett Nettleship (1841–1902), painter, was the author of Essays on Robert Browning’s Poetry (1868), the first book-length study of RB’s works. William S. Peterson describes Nettleship as “an infuriatingly bad critic” (Interrogating the Oracle, Athens, Ohio, 1969, p. 66). Nettleship later became one of the mainstays of the London Browning Society.
