How could you fancy for a moment that, if apology were due, any other than myself was bound to pay it. The fact is, I was prodigiously tired and earnest to get to bed, and I thought we could not go further than the street together. It was ungrateful in me to go with a last shake of the hand—but I thought & think you cannot misunderstand even that
