Dear Sir,

I received your very obliging letter this morning, and, some hours after, the signal & valued honor of the Diploma. [2]

Will you kindly deliver the accompanying letter of thanks [3] in the proper manner? I fancied the language employed should be Latin,—it can do no harm except to myself if I was wrong. I have written calams, ut aiunt, admodum festinante, [4] —as there has been already some little delay in the transmission of the document.
