Offered for sale in Sotheby’s Catalogue, 23 November 1900, lot 186. 2 pp., 8vo. RB remarks: “I was just about to write to you, having waited for a letter from Robert, which I expected to-day, and though I do not get it, I will show you the two letters I have received, which are certainly satisfactory enough. He is lodging in a building belonging to Balliol, [2] wherein other freshmen are immediately under Mr. Jowett’s superintendence.”

1. Approximate dating based on Pen’s presence at Oxford (he arrived there on 21 October) and RB’s mention of having received “two letters” and of expecting another “to-day.”

2. Pen had gone to Oxford on 21 October to stay and study for two months under the supervision of Benjamin Jowett. As indicated in letter 5988, Pen also had the benefit of Reginald Broughton’s tutelage.
