May 6. ’68

Dear Mrs Schlesinger,

I want you & your Husband to do me a great kind of little favour,—and by this time, you have got to be kind enough to me for anything,—namely,—not to allude in any way, before or after dinner to-morrow, to that enormous event of the Day! [1] Never mind why,—set it all down to my nonsense,—so much the greater will be your kindness, for which I thank you gratefully beforehand—as for so much beside–

Ever most truly yours

Robert Browning.

Address: Mrs Schlesinger.

Publication: None traced.

Manuscript: Armstrong Browning Library.

1. i.e., RB’s birthday, his 56th, on 7 May 1868.
