My dear Millais,

Leighton wrote to me about the kind wish of Mr O’Neil, and invited me to the dinner: I told him of my engagements for the 16th and how little you would lose by foregoing a speech of mine: my feeling about art & artists he needed not be told. You also will be able to express my sincere thanks to Mr O’Neil, as well as to my Inviters.

Let me get another little satisfaction of my own out the incident: this must be the institution to which you so handsomely asked me to contribute my mite last year: will you put my name down as an annual subscriber of a guinea, just for love’s sake? I will pay you subscription the first when I next have the good fortune to see you.
