Helas Je n’ai pas des bas propres– en effet Je suis bien malheureuse mais Madame Fortune le veux et elle veux aussi d’etre obeit– en verité ce Madame Fortune c’est un femme dont la pudeur et la coquett[e]rie est estimable. Je suis beaucoup enrhumée J’en conviens et peutetre il me fait de bien de rester ici mais malgré tout cela c’est un chose bien effroyable de rester seule—mais n’en parlez plus Je suis bien mecontente. J’avouerai tachons de nous contenter. À present Je veux mettre au papier ce que J’espere vous demander la ba[s]. N’est t’il point d’autre livre que Je puis lire[?] J’ai lu tous que Je crois les plus beaux pour l’amour de moi ma chere Maman ayez pitié de moi!– envoyez Henriette Je vous prie avec votre reponse– J’espere que vous vous portiez mieux car J’ai envie de vous voir tout-a-fait en-bon-point–

My beloved Mama
Alas I do not have any clean hose. In fact I am very unhappy but Madame Fortune wants it so and she wants also to be obeyed. Truly Madame Fortune is a lady whose modesty and coquetry are estimable. I have a bad cold, I admit, and perhaps it will do me good to stay here even though in spite of all it is a frightening thing to stay home alone—but say no more about it, I am very discontented. I will acknowledge that we should try to be happy. Now I must put down on paper what I hope to ask you there. Is there no other book I could read? I have read all that I think the best, for the love of me, my dear Mama, have pity on me!—send Henrietta I beg you with your answer. I hope that you are feeling better, because I would like to see you in complete good health.
Alas I cannot salute you any other way, but rest assured that I always love you with all my little heart.
