[London]
Monday. [?9 April 1838] [2]
My dear Miss Martineau,
I am unluckily engaged on Wednesday; but will endeavour to see you, if only for a minute, in the course of the evening.
Yours faithfully
Robt Browning.
Pray remember me very kindly to Mrs Martineau. [3]
Publication: None traced.
Manuscript: Harvard University.
1. For details of RB’s friendship with Miss Martineau, see pp. 325-327.
2. This letter has no watermark, and could have been written any time between 1836, when RB is thought to have first met Miss Martineau, and April 1839, when Miss Martineau left London. Lacking any more definite evidence, we have assigned this conjectural date, as Miss Martineau recorded that RB visited her on Wednesday, 11 April 1838 (Harriet Martineau’s Autobiography, ed. Maria W. Chapman, 1877, II, 337).
3. Elizabeth Martineau (née Rankin, 1773–1848).
