Wednesday August 24.

I read a little of Theophrastus,—not much,—for a letter arrived from Malvern, & I had to write to Mrs. Boyd as well as to my friend. He wrote to me, but not many lines: kind ones, however. He calls the Walls’ conduct, “brutal & unfeeling,” but vindicates Dr. Card who was asked to accompany them. In my answer I told him what I[1] thought of Dr. Card!—& think!—[2]

He says that he felt on reading my letter how unworthy he was of the regard which I feel for him— Perhaps unworthy in one way.

I copied some music this evening, & did nothing else worth commemorizing.

1. Underscored twice.

2. For her letter, see BC, 2, 325–326.
