Tuesday. Sept 13.

So Sam came home in an irrational unchristian state, from the Cricket match last night! Henrietta heard him carried up stairs, & was very much frightened. Neither he nor Bro appeared at breakfast; for Bro went out to shoot, & he went to Mathon—& the farther he goes the better. Henrietta is very very angry, & threatens not to speak to him for a fortnight, which wd. be, in my opinion, both wrong abstractedly speaking, & impolitic. Nobody is immaculate; & young men are more inclined to fault of this kind, than to many others; & our sullen[n]ess wd. do no more good in such a case, than Xerxes’s whipping did to the sea. I hate sullenness, whether it be the quality of the offended or offender.

I read parts of scripture with reference to the Calvinistic controversy, & little else today. I am going thro’ all the epistles, marking with my pencil every expression that seems to glance at or against the doctrine of particular exclusive election.
