[Paris—Sunday, 30 October 1859]

Sunday 30th The rain still holds but we take a long walk on the Champs Elysées & when evening shuts down drive to the Greenes to take tea. Have the easiest little French time imaginable. It was warm and a little pleasanter as we returned. They are most excellent people. They chanced to call to mind some poor people who needed their assistance and finding Jamie could convey the money gave us $100 dollars at once to begin a subscription. Peculiar and full of theories for life they are nevertheless truly excellent.
