[Paris—Sunday, 13 November 1859]

Sunday 13th Read at home today then took a sunny stroll about the fine city; at last we were attracted to the unrivalled Madeleine. We went in awhile and listened to the music & I felt that all was not bad there because the lowly ignorant of the earth found there a palpable foundation of their faith but for the rest I can only cry “How long, O Lord, how long.”
