[Baden-Baden—Saturday, 27 August 1859]

Saturday 27th Still warm. Took books and went to the woods where we read listening to the music at times coming to us with perfect distinctness as it did, from the Platz below, talked over our plans and in short passed the entire day in this coolness and seclusion. Dined at 5 then drove through the Forest to the Duke’s Jagd. Haus. A fierce storm was approaching. The wildness of the scene was in strange contrast to the gayety we had left. We drove hurriedly home, listening in the heat and blackness for the welcome rain-drops.
