[Hospenthal—Wednesday, 7 September 1859]

Wednesday 7th came, we retraced our steps in the morning sun-light making all things seem fairer than before and we left forever all this glory behind us. However it is ours now, and forever. This afternoon found us at the pretty village of Beckenried on the opposite shore of Lake Lucerne. Once more we passed Tell’s Chapel and the pleasant meadow of Grütli all up among the clouds with their grand associations. It is touching to see the people all rise and watch as we pass and hear the many eager questions from the less attentive travellers fearing they shall lose something.
