[Florence—Friday, 20 January 1860]

Friday 20th Called upon Mrs Kennard. She is living in a palace built by Napoleon le premier. The paintings in the drawing-room are superb. Had a nice talk with Dr Wilson about Edinburgh and dear old England.

Received a call from Mrs Stowe this week. She talked charmingly about Hawthorne. Like old pictures, she thinks, an uncultivated taste would hardly relish him, but once understand him and you feel that the marvels of Highest Art stand before you.

She has promised to write for the Atlantic.
