[Rome—Sunday, 11 March 1860]

Sunday 11th Took a long walk with Jamie among the ruins of the Palace of the Cesars, the day was unspeakably lovely and the whole scene was full of music.

At Miss Cushman’s in the evening we found a most choice company. Mr Lear, (Tennyson’s friend) Mr Browning, Mr Russell the British minister and Mr Newton, they had been dining there and we six were the sole guests.
