[Rome—Wednesday, 14 March 1860]

Wednesday 14th “Clouded noons” like the sweet April weather of England reigns. Breakfasted with Mr and Mrs Parker and Miss Stevenson at Miss Cushman’s. Talked somewhat about the Pilgrims and Plymouth. Mr Parker described a leaping steamboat on the Mississippi and how he does it [here is a drawing of a boat] the knees below bending like a frog’s. Played games with the Howards and Stowe’s in the evening.
