[London—Saturday, 28 April 1860]
Saturday 28th Laden with kindnesses & flowers we came to London at 12 o’clk and about 4 started out to see Holman Hunt’s picture Christ teaching in the Temple. How can the world ever be unbelieving and short-sighted enough to say that Christianity totters? Surely this great picture is a living enduring protest against such folly. I feel a blessing and a teaching falling on us from this glowing canvas and thank God that the doubt of Thomas has fallen to the ground before the Faith of this man. What a light must live in his soul and what a large benediction!!
This picture opens a new era in Art. The old things have become as new, through the magic of bold Truth. Christianity has received another lamp in this picture which sheds its holy light on all within its sphere.
