[Boston—Saturday, 31 October 1863]

October 31. Finished the first volume of Theo. Parker’s “Life and Letters.” They contain much that is remarkable more that is sad. The truest thing is his estimate of himself “irritabile but not irritabile vatis.” It was a noble sorrowful career.

Charlotte Cushman arrived about ½ past 9 at night, full of power and sweetness as usual. We fell to talking and never slackened until ¼ past 12 when affrighted at the lateness of the hour we scrambled off to bed like naughty children. J. had been to see the organ and returned absorbed in its vastness and beauty. Men wept as they listened to it.
